Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga Intensive for Yoga Teachers

We are excited to share the expertise of Joe Barnett, ERYT - 500, and primary teaching assistant of Paul Grilley (founder of Yin Yoga) in this special Yin Yoga Intensive for Yoga Teachers.

Joe travels internationally offering certifications and training programs, we are lucky to have him this time in San Jose, Costa Rica.

We invite you to join this rare opportunity to study Yin Yoga in Costa Rica. The practice of Yin is a beautiful compliment to our traditional yang classes & trainings.

Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into an asana for 3-7 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper drier tissues–the connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules–to be safely and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and strengthened.

This intensive training will be in English. A certificate of completion will be given as documentation.

Topics:
  • Yin Yoga Anatomy
  • Yin Yoga Hips
  • Yin Yoga Meditation/Dreamwork
  • Yin Yoga Chakra Layers & Modern Meridian Theory
  • Yin Yoga Alignment Applied to Acro Yoga

About Joe Barnett: Yin Yoga & Acro Yoga

Joe Barnett, ERYT-500, based loosely in both Cincinnati, OH and Tucson, AZ, has been teaching for 14 years.

Joe is a senior student and primary teaching assistant of Paul Grilley, a true Yoga Scientist and founder of Yin Yoga. After several years of apprenticing under Paul, Joe began roaming the globe to spread the word of his teacher’s work: 1) Yin Yoga, 2) a Functional Analysis of the Skeleton, and 3) Chakra Meditation.

Joe provides a deep study (both experiential and anatomical) of the crude physical Skeleton and Fascia, as well as the more subtle Meridians and Chakras.  He travels nationally and internationally year round offering presentations and trainings on Yin and Yang (Vinyasa) forms of Yoga.

His play time is usually spent practicing, teaching and drawing others into AcroYoga which he has been playing since 2006 when he met
Jason Magness, Co-Founder of YogaSlackers, with whom he continues to train/play whenever he can. In 2010, Joe traveled to Montreal to receive both levels of certification through the original AcroYogis Eugene Poku and Jessie Goldberg.

Module I: Yin Yoga Basics - Explore Target Areas

Yin Yoga is a very simple practice. We settle into a posture for 3-7 minutes and slowly relax our muscles to allow the deeper drier tissues–-the connective tissues that wrap our muscles and make up our joint capsules-–to be safely and therapeutically stretched, stimulated and strengthened.
The alignment rules of the postures are also simple, but more importantly they are functional and organic: Listen to the body and find the posture in the natural contours of spine, pelvis and hips. However, simplicity can be challenging. Listening to our bodies to find the natural alignment of the pose requires a power of discrimination, and an understanding and familiarity with the ever-changing sensations in the body.
In this practice, Joe will patiently and compassionately lead you into an exploration of the many possible shapes. And cue the functional sensations and warn of possible contraindications.

Module II: Yin Yoga Anatomy - Discover Alignment Through Your Bones

Precise alignment is a hot topic among Yoga Teachers.

However, the way to safe and effective posture and movement is written in the bones of the individual. Anatomical structure is unique to each Yogi; therefore, alignment is infinite in its possibilities.

Joe will offer a brief lecture on Yin Twisting to understand why we should do it. An interactive exploration of skeletal variations using fake bones and real bones (yours) to contemplate how each individual should execute it. And the practice of Assisted Yin Yoga to complete the hands-on interactive study.

In this training, Joe Barnett will share the wisdom of his long time mentor Paul Grilley blended with his own method of hands-on anatomical study. The training offers Yoga teachers the tools to realize their own unique anatomy and the analytic skills to help guide others into their own unique Alignment.

Module III: Hips Exploration - Internal vs. External Rotation via Swan's Pose

Do you know if your hips rotate internally? or externally? What about your students' hips?

This interactive study of skeletal variations will  offer a clear view of the distinct directions you and each of your individual students naturally spiral.

You will learn how our hips are naturally designed to roll toward one direction more than the other. You will also see how each body is unique. As a teacher, you can apply this knowledge to your students' practice, guiding each into a therapeautic experience during your classes.

Module IV: Yin Yoga Relaxation - 3rd Eye Focus, Dream Work & Meditations

Yin Yoga's techniques of surrender and observation naturally open the Third Eye: the space where visions and dreams are projected (but maybe not where they originate).

As the deep tissue  is released in Yin Yoga, water channels open up in the physical body, the energy flows more freely and an equally fluid course of visions often follow.

Working a variety of these Meridian lines with a complete sequence can induce an equally wide spectrum of imagery which begin to interweave and create a landscape of stories.

At this point the Yogi has a golden opportunity: An opportunity to achieve Lucidity in the terms of Western Dream Science, or Samadhi in the terms of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras;

An opportunity to see and interact clearly and calmly with our Shadows as well as our Higher Selves.
The intention of this practice will be to develop Third Eye receptivity while freeing the joints of stagnation and fixation.

Module V: Subtle Body Study - Ancient Chakra Layers & Modern Meridian Theories

The mysteries of the energetic body go as deep as the Spirit, as deep as the mysteries of life and death.

The study of the Chakras and Meridians is the study of the wheels and rivers of subtle energy that unite our physical, emotional and thinking bodies.
Yin Yoga directly affects the Meridian system. And the techniques of surrender can lead the practitioner into his/her spine where the Chakra wheels spin and deep truths reside.

Joe will present an outline of the Ancient Theory of the Three Bodies (Chakra layers) and how it blends with the Modern Meridian Theory through a brief lecture.

However, the real education is in the practice: A Yin Yoga sequence to release thick fibrous channels of Fascia where the Meridian lines commonly stagnate; And brief but potent Chakra Meditations to pull the freed energy deep into the spine, for awakening and evolution of the Heart/Spirit.

Module VI: Yin Alignment & Acro Yoga - Lifting Up Through Your Bones

It's time to play!

Joe has been practicing Acro Yoga since 2006 and loves to apply Yin Yoga alignment to his Acro practice. Finding strength and stability in the bones, you will begin to expand your body's expressions and fly.

Learn the basics of this beautiful partner/group practice, reviewing how to be a base and flyer. And keeping with Yin Yoga theme discover the therapautic properties of Acro Yoga.
